Documentary wedding photography at a safari game reserve, South Africa — Ben Viljoen

Safari & Game Reserve
Wedding Photography

Documentary wedding photography at game reserves and safari lodges across South Africa — the Greater Kruger, Welgevonden, the KZN North Coast, and beyond.

The bush wedding

The African bush is one of the most
extraordinary places to get married.

The light at a game reserve at the end of the afternoon is unlike anything else — low, warm, and directional in a way that makes even a simple moment look extraordinary. The sense of space. The sounds. The feeling that something genuinely wild is just beyond the edge of the frame.

I've been photographing weddings at safari lodges and game reserves across South Africa since 2008, and the bush remains one of the environments I return to most often. Every reserve has its own character — the dense riverine thickets of the Kruger lowveld are nothing like the open grasslands of Welgevonden, or the coastal bush of the KZN North Coast. That variety keeps the photography interesting.

My approach doesn't change because of the setting. I photograph documentary-first, watching and following rather than directing. The landscape does the heavy lifting; my job is to be present and paying attention when it all comes together.

Where I work

Reserves & lodges.

These are some of the reserves and areas I know well — but it's not an exhaustive list. If your venue isn't here, get in touch.

The approach

Documentary
first. Always.

The setting changes; the approach doesn't. At a safari wedding I'm still watching, still following, still waiting for the moments that happen when no one is performing for the camera.

The bush adds something particular though — a quality of light in the late afternoon that I find myself planning around, and an environment that makes people feel genuinely relaxed in a way that a city venue sometimes doesn't.

I work quietly and without disruption. At a game reserve more than anywhere else, the day has its own rhythm — the golden hour is brief, the wildlife doesn't wait — and I've learned to move with it rather than against it.
